During this tour, we visit different habitats and lodges, ensuring maximum variation. We never stay more than two nights in the same lodge, allowing us to make the most of each area and to maximise opportunities for both birdwatching and photography.
Both classic routes offer unique opportunities to explore diverse habitats and carefully selected lodges, ranging from wetland areas to quiet river environments. Although some bird species may overlap between locations, each habitat has its own characteristic species and atmosphere. This variation in environment creates different photographic opportunities and backgrounds, enabling you to photograph both familiar and new species in changing settings.
Each lodge is located within a specific habitat that invites exploration, from mangrove forests to open savanna areas. For bird photographers, this tour offers an ideal way to experience Gambia’s rich birdlife from multiple perspectives, without long travel days and with plenty of time for photography.

Day 1: Arrival and Tanbi Wetlands Exploration
Your birding tour begins upon arrival at Banjul Airport. You will travel to the charming Mandinari River Lodge, set in beautiful surroundings. There, we will explore the Tanbi Wetlands and the lush garden of the lodge, where you can spot and photograph colorful birds in a serene, natural oasis.
Day 2: Hike and Bird of Prey Spotting
The morning begins with a hike through the mangroves, rice fields and wetlands of Mandinari, a perfect place for bird lovers. In the afternoon, we will visit a bird of prey hotspot, where you will have unique opportunities to take impressive photos of these majestic birds.
Day 3: Travel to Tendaba Camp and Bird Hides
After a delicious breakfast, we will depart inland to Tendaba Camp, 142 km away. Along the way, we will stop at several bird-rich hotspots, including the famous Farasutu Forest. After arriving in Tendaba we will visit one of the bird hides in the area.
Day 4: Boat trip and Kwinella Bushtrack
We start the day with a beautiful boat trip through the mangroves along the Gambia River. This trip offers fantastic opportunities to observe and photograph water birds in their natural habitat. In the afternoon we explore the Kwinella bushtrack, where we enjoy the varied landscape and the local bird species.
Day 5: To the Coast and Wetlands in Kartong
After breakfast we depart for the coast to the charming village of Kartong, located near the border with Senegal. We spend the night at Stala Lodge and in the evening we take a trip to the nearby wetlands to discover even more bird species.
Day 6: Kartong Bird Watching Observatory and Halahin River
The morning takes us to the famous Kartong Bird Watching Observatory, an absolute must-see for bird lovers. In the afternoon we take a boat trip on the Halahin River, with unique opportunities to see different bird species, herons and crocodiles, a peaceful environment with unique bird watching and photography opportunities.
Day 7: Gunjur, Tanji Fish Market and Tanema Creek Lodge
After breakfast we drive to Gunjur, where we visit the lively Tanji Fish Market. Here you will experience the local culture while observing and photographing birds around the coastline. After lunch we continue our journey to Tanema Creek Lodge, where we end the day with a nature walk in the area.
Day 8: Final Excursion and Departure
On the last day, depending on flight times, we will visit Kotu Bridge and the surrounding nature. If time permits, we will take a trip to the Lamin rice fields before we take you to the airport for your return flight.
